WinAVI is a simple video converter software that performs simple functions. It isn’t really a bad program, so to speak, we were just sad to find that its conversion input and output options were limited, and its customization options were minimal.
Most of the tests we performed were successful, with the exception of VOB files. No matter how hard we tried we were unable to convert our VOB files. WinAVI’s is also completely incompatible with Apple formats and products. It does not support QuickTime, iPod, MP4 files or MOV files.

Input Files: 

This program supports AVI, Matroska file, ASF, RealMedia, QuickTime/MPEG-4, Flash, FLV and MPEG formats.  We would've liked to have seen more file formats in this area as many video conversions deal with formats that aren't included in this list.  A larger amount of input file formats gives the user a little more flexibility in terms of what they can do with the program.

Output Files: 

The amount of output formats is even smaller than the amount of input formats.  You can only convert your videos in RM, DVD, AVI and WMV formats.  That's it.  You can't even convert your videos into common file formats like MP4.  The lack of file formats in this area is pretty disappointing.  We would definitely like to see some more file formats here.

Features: 

Some additional features include the ability to incorporate some minor effects and video adjustment, change the screen dimensions, frame rate and audio bitrate, and burn to DVDs. However, it cannot merge files or convert audio.  Users can take advantage of the batch conversion and VCD/SVCD/DVD burner options.  A larger amount of additional features would do wonders, but they need to focus on their main feature set first.  Once they have that figured out, they can begin to add additional features to help them become a well-rounded program.

Ease of Use: 

We had no problems figuring out anything having to do with this program.  There were some confusing aspects of its interface, but after spending a little bit of time getting used to the software, these weren't an issue.

Help and Support: 

Although WinAVI includes a comprehensive in-program help manual, that answered most of our questions, we did encounter an issue when submitting a support issue. The support ticket built into the manufacturer’s website wouldn’t send. We had to copy the information to a personal email address and send our questions that way.

Our email was responded to, but our questions weren’t really answered.

Summary:

WinAVI Video Converter is flawed video converter software that can help you get the job done if you don't have to do very much in terms of video conversion.  This program would need to be overhauled to be a true competitor in this area.
