Windows 8 is beginning to take shape. At a developer conference at the start of June, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer showed off some of the features that will be included in the next version of Windows. It’s not due for release until next year, but we’ve now got a pretty good idea of what to expect from what may prove to be the last ever Windows operating system.
Both Apple CEO Steve Jobs and former Microsoft big-wig Ray Ozzie have said that we are entering a 'post-PC' world. So the challenge for Windows 8 is to prove that desktop computing as we know it is not consigned to history.
We’re far from sure that Windows as we know it is done with yet, but the details we’ve seen so far suggest Microsoft has rethought how we interact with technology in a far more substantial way than ever before. Software will be written in programming languages more applicable to the web, while Explorer menus and even windows themselves look set to be shown the door. Not everything will be radically different, of course, but there’s enough that is to pique even the anti-Microsoft brigade’s interest.
Here, we look at some of those features in detail, outline what we’d like to see in Windows 8, and report on what’s still missing.
We also take a look at the alternatives to Windows, from Apple’s brand-new OS X 10.7 Lion to the most user-friendly version of Linux to date, and the OS that perhaps offers the clearest indication of where desktop computing is heading, Google’s Chrome OS.

What’s new in Windows 8?

For more than 20 years, Microsoft has defined the computing landscape for more than a billion customers around the world. This was the bold claim of Microsoft’s corporate vice-president, Mike Angiulo, speaking at the Computex tradeshow in Taipei this June.
Along with Ballmer, Angiulo has been showing off the latest builds of Windows 8, Microsoft’s next desktop OS. It’s not that long since Windows 7 went onsale, but Windows 8 is set to debut in mid-2012 as a radically different-looking proposition. In fact, it will be perhaps the most radical overhaul since the fabled Windows 95 launch that catapulted Windows into the desktop OS stratosphere.
With all those customers at stake, Microsoft has its work cut out to please more than it irks with its new approach to desktop computing and in persuading us to upgrade from our existing Windows versions.

Windows 7 is now just over 18 months old, yet Windows 8 first broke cover in July 2010. Cynics might suggest that the fact that the first images of Windows 8 appeared mere months after the official launch of Windows 7 indicates there’s likely to be very little new behind the scenes. Some things will remain the same - specifically, the ability to run programs you already own. But in many ways, Windows 8 offers a radical departure from existing versions of Microsoft’s platform.
Few people want Windows to have more features. What it needs is more focus - and to be easier to get around. Windows 8 looks set to offer both these things - provided that you favour touchscreen navigation.
Microsoft is introducing a tiled interface that looks like a direct import from its successful Windows Phone 7 mobile OS. These tiles offer a clear indication that Microsoft is shifting from traditional keyboard and mouse input to fingers and touchscreens.
A Microsoft blog post published at the start of June to coincide with Ballmer’s keynote unveiling of the in-progress OS stated: "Windows 8 is a reimagining of Windows, from the chip to the interface.
A Windows 8 PC is a new kind of device, one that scales from touch-only small screens through to large screens, with or without a keyboard and mouse."

Why it’s all about touch

The news that Windows 8 will be primarily a touch-based interface isn’t a surprise. Most commentators had predicted that it would be far more focused on tablets and mobile use than on the traditional office desktop PC. Given the shift in computer-purchasing patterns over the past five years, this makes sense. However, while laptop sales have outstripped desktop sales since 2009, there’s little evidence that people are eschewing their main PCs in favour of touchscreen tablets. Microsoft needs to ensure it’s covering all bases.
Touchscreen controls will not be the only option for input. With legacy programs to support, a new programming layer will sit between them and the interface and improve the way the two work together. Conversely, says Windows 8’s chief designer, Julie Larson-Green, while Microsoft’s focus on touch means most programs will now be written for finger-friendly control, this programming layer will ensure that they will also work well with a keyboard and mouse.
This isn’t prevarication on Microsoft’s part: a touchscreen interface won’t suit every user. Accessibility issues for those with physical and visual impairments mean Microsoft won’t be abandoning traditional input modes. At this stage, though, we don’t have details about the interface customisation options that may be offered. Our guess is that Windows 8 will also offer a ‘classic’ version of the interface, allowing anyone with a specific setup requirement – or simply using software that requires a particular screen mode - to continue to access it.

TuneUp StartUp Manager
A smooth-running system results when there are no unnecessary autostart applications. The improved TuneUp Startup Manager organizes your programs into groups and provides clear explanations to make it easier for you to identify those programs that are not needed.New automatic startup programs are now highlighted so that you can disable unwanted entries more easily. Free up disk space

In addition, TuneUp Disk Space Explorer now runs faster and no longer requires that an entire drive be analyzed. You can now specify that only those folders be analyzed that you are really interested in.
Lots more improvements
Along with the totally new features, there are a series of improvements that are not immediately visible. There are small improvements like Tooltips in the main window, a substantial increase in the number of problems that can be found byTuneUp Registry Cleaner, and better progress feedback from TuneUp Drive Defrag. But there are also big improvements “under the hood”. Two good examples are a completely reworked installation program and significant improvements in our update technology.

As more and more portable devices integrate camcorder functionality, recording amateur video on the fly becomes a much less daunting task. However, editing that video can be another matter altogether. From very basic consumer apps to professional grade production suites, there's no shortage of software available to help you trim your footage and add an appropriate soundtrack.
Sony's Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0 falls somewhere in the middle in terms of consumer video-editing programs. It's probably too advanced for most newbies, but those with some level of experience toying with digital video will find that it offers a nicely laid-out interface and plenty of features.
The main window for this version of Vegas Movie Studio is divided into four sections that are all pretty straightforward in function. The top of the screen offers a preview pane, a trimming window, and a multitabbed media corner that contains the files you've imported. This section also lets you access additional content, including video transitions and effects. The bottom half of the screen is dominated by the editing bank, into which you can drag and drop various video and audio clips from the media corner. Projects offer six components initially: text, video overlay, video, voice, music, and sound effects. ("Voice" generally refers to the audio originally attached to the video in this case.)
Lining the very top of the window is a multitude of icons that can take you into the various features of the software. With one click, you can enable snapping, lock envelopes to events, and insert automatic crossfades. The sheer number of options can be overwhelming to first-time users; luckily, Sony includes a prominent "show me how" button that takes you directly to various handy tutorials for the program.
As for features, Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum is not lacking. Some that carried over from version 9.0 include the ability to edit and produce movies with special effects and transitions, create DVDs and Blu-ray Discs with custom menus and graphics, and share movies on portable devices. In version 10.0, Sony has simplified the new project experience, as well as added a built-in image stabilization tool, a slideshow creator, and support for an increased number of audio and video tracks in a single project.
Sony Vegas is capable of importing 26 audio, video, and image file formats, including QuickTime, MPEG-4, and AVI. It can save to 25 file types. In addition, it can edit and save in high-def, and there's an option to publish final movies directly to YouTube.
We tested the software on a system running Windows XP on 2.3GHz AMD Dual Core Processor with 3GB of RAM and were treated to a fairly smooth experience. (Sony recommends a 1GHz processor with at least 2GB of RAM for HD.) There were some hiccups; notably, transitions didn't play smoothly in preview and in a few instances, our final rendered videos were buggy during playback--one AVI output failed to attach the audio and one MOV suffered from jittery video. However, WMV and MPEG4 final output files played flawlessly, so we recommend saving to one of those formats instead. Videos take quite a bit of time to fully render, but that's just the nature of the beast--especially when it comes to high-def.
It's also worth noting that we did some side-by-side testing against iMovie running on a Macbook with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. This is a matter of personal preference, but we found the language in Sony Vegas to be generally more straightforward than that of iMovie, and adding audio clips was a more transparent process as well. However, iMovie makes easier work of exporting and offers more hand-holding in terms of creating seamless projects.

I think it is fairly safe to say that the introduction of the GeForce GTX 470/480 certainly has not been a smooth ride for NVIDIA. Sales have been okay at best but there has definitely been some reputation damage done due to three key negatives with that product series. Heat levels, noise levels and power consumption have been haunting and plaguing NVIDIA ever since the release of these two cards. When the GTX 465 arrived things were already looking much better. But one thing can be said, the overall performance and overclockability of all of these cards have been top notch ever since day one of the release.
Today NVIDIA is releasing a second graphics processor based on the Fermi architecture, and that new GPU has had to adapt and adjust for the damage done with the 1st generation Fermi series. By releasing two SKUs today based on the new GF104 silicon, NVIDIA will very likely make this launch a successful one.
At the 200 USD level NVIDIA has placed the focus on a product series that performs at the level of the GTX 465 and Radeon HD 5830 (actually slightly better) yet produces two SKUs that are near silent (based on reference cooler), show normal GPU temperatures and hover around a maximum 150~160 Watt TDP (peak power consumption). And that from the get-go definitely already sounds a whole lot better. And you know what, it is, as this article will show you.
Add to that the fact that these two SKUs overclock incredibly well and we can safely assume that the GeForce GTX 460 series that launches today should become a really nice success. Especially when you bear in mind that every and any board partner will release high-clock SKUs opposed to reference clocked graphics cards.
As such, today we'll be looking at GeForce GTX 460. There will be two different models, one 768MB version and a 1024MB version. Have a peek below at what we'll look at today, then please head onward to the next page where we'll start up a technology overview and specifications briefing, after which we'll dive into an extensive photo shoot covering the products we are testing today, as we certainly received a bucket load of GeForce GTX 460 cards from NVIDIA's board partners. Desktops, Laptops Intel's 2nd Generation Core processor family announced, includes 29 new CPUs and enhanced graphics

They're here! That is, Intel's Sandy Bridge mobile and desktop processors herein known as the 2nd Generation Core processor family or more simply as Intel Core 2011 processors to us. After months of teasing and on-stage demos, Chipzilla is finally unleashing the details of its new Core i3, i5, and i7 processors, and considering there are 29 new CPUs in total as well as new integrated graphics options (now known as processor graphics) there's quite a bit to digest. Hit the break for our rundown of the new platform and a look at some of Intel's newest performance and graphics-focused features.

What's new here?

It was just a year ago that Intel released its first generation Core processors, so what exactly makes this platform different? Well, a few things. For those that haven't followed the Sandy Bridge saga, the new family of processors are all based on Intel's 32nm microarchitecture and are the first to put both the processor, memory controller, and graphics on the same die. What's that mean for you? In short, it means the package is smaller and all the parts get to take advantage of each other better -- for instance, by dynamically clocking both the CPU cores and graphics to match whatever workload you throw at it, and giving them up to 1MB of shared cache. Speaking of those graphics, while they may still not be on par with a discrete video card, they're more powerful than ever before. According to Intel, the new HD 2000 and 3000 processor graphics provide 2x the performance of Capella-based systems, and that actually holds up with what we've seen in early benchmarks (so long, GMA 4500). What's more, Intel's improved its Turbo Boost and Hyper-threading technologies such that the new chips enable higher levels of CPU performance as well -- up to a 60 percent improvement with quad-core mobile CPUs. Additionally, the new integrated chips reduce power consumption and can actually completely turn off an idle optical drive, enabling what Intel's calling "incredible battery life."

The processor details

That new architecture means new CPUs, and Intel's introducing a total of 29 new processors, which include different varieties of mobile and desktop Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 models. The chart above gives you a pretty good breakdown of the versions and Intel's provided a more detailed breakdown of each of these, including clock speeds and TDP here. You will note that there's a slightly different naming convention now -- there's the processor name followed by four numbers, rather than the previous three. As we had heard, the quad-core i7 CPUs will be the first to ship in systems -- they should be hitting this week -- while the dual-core versions won't be shipping until February. Not to worry, the ultra-low voltage (ULV) versions for ultraportable laptops are coming and will be introduced in the second half of the year. There's even a set of specially-marked overclockable 'K' series processors for the tweakers in your family, which lets them individually set the clockspeed ratios for each individual core -- though they'll also need a premium P67 Express motherboard.

New features

That's the brunt of the technical stuff (if you are looking for more on that, hit some of the links in more coverage), but Intel's trying harder than ever to explain the speeds and feeds with new consumer friendly features. Most of them have to do with the enhanced graphics -- here's a short rundown of the main ones we expect to hear quite a bit about at CES and at Intel's CES presser.

• Intel Quick Sync Video - The title of this one isn't exactly the most self explanatory, but Intel's promising way faster video transcoding with it's new integrated Quick Sync feature, which does encoding in hardware -- it says it will be 17x faster than older generations of integrated graphics. Intel's partnered with media software companies like CyberLink, Corel, and ArcSoft to enable this hardware-accelerated H.264 and MPEG-2 video conversion.

• Intel InTru 3D / Clear Video HD - 3D Blu-ray playback over HDMI 1.4? Not a problem for Intel's Core 2011 platform. This doesn't mean Intel's providing the 3D technology for laptops or desktops, but it's promising that you can play stereoscopic 3D and HD content on your TV using HDMI.

• WiDi 2.0 - Our biggest complaints about the original WiDi was the lack of support for 1080p. Well, Intel's finally enabled streaming of full HD with its latest processors. There's still lag and you will need to pick up a new TV receiver, most likely a new one from Netgear, to take advantage of the new full HD abilities. Now what?

What's next? A boatload of laptops and desktops powered by these new processors, that's what! Oh yes, Intel says that over 500 systems will be based on the new platform. We've already seen a few leak out, but you can bet on most of the major computer manufacturers announcing new systems at CES 2011 (Lenovo's taken the first step!), so stay tuned for tons of announcements. WinAVI Video Converter 8.0 with working key

WinAVI is a simple video converter software that performs simple functions. It isn’t really a bad program, so to speak, we were just sad to find that its conversion input and output options were limited, and its customization options were minimal.
Most of the tests we performed were successful, with the exception of VOB files. No matter how hard we tried we were unable to convert our VOB files. WinAVI’s is also completely incompatible with Apple formats and products. It does not support QuickTime, iPod, MP4 files or MOV files.

Input Files: 

This program supports AVI, Matroska file, ASF, RealMedia, QuickTime/MPEG-4, Flash, FLV and MPEG formats.  We would've liked to have seen more file formats in this area as many video conversions deal with formats that aren't included in this list.  A larger amount of input file formats gives the user a little more flexibility in terms of what they can do with the program.

Output Files: 

The amount of output formats is even smaller than the amount of input formats.  You can only convert your videos in RM, DVD, AVI and WMV formats.  That's it.  You can't even convert your videos into common file formats like MP4.  The lack of file formats in this area is pretty disappointing.  We would definitely like to see some more file formats here.

Features: 

Some additional features include the ability to incorporate some minor effects and video adjustment, change the screen dimensions, frame rate and audio bitrate, and burn to DVDs. However, it cannot merge files or convert audio.  Users can take advantage of the batch conversion and VCD/SVCD/DVD burner options.  A larger amount of additional features would do wonders, but they need to focus on their main feature set first.  Once they have that figured out, they can begin to add additional features to help them become a well-rounded program.

Ease of Use: 

We had no problems figuring out anything having to do with this program.  There were some confusing aspects of its interface, but after spending a little bit of time getting used to the software, these weren't an issue.

Help and Support: 

Although WinAVI includes a comprehensive in-program help manual, that answered most of our questions, we did encounter an issue when submitting a support issue. The support ticket built into the manufacturer’s website wouldn’t send. We had to copy the information to a personal email address and send our questions that way.

Our email was responded to, but our questions weren’t really answered.

Summary:

WinAVI Video Converter is flawed video converter software that can help you get the job done if you don't have to do very much in terms of video conversion.  This program would need to be overhauled to be a true competitor in this area.
